Then and Now $7.94 Most Lynyrd Skynyrd fans would agree that the band reached its creative peak in the 1970s, but that doesn’t mean that Skynyrd’s 1990s work is without merit. While it’s true that the Southern rockers provided their most essential recordings in the 1970s, Skynyrd’s 1990s lineups definitely had their moments in the studio, and their live shows continued to please die-hard fans. Released in 2000, Then and Now is an enjoyable, if imperfect, collection of live and studio tracks that draws on Skynyrd’s three CMC International releases of the late ’90s: Lyve From Steeltown, Edge of Forever, and Twenty. Inspired performances of 1970s favorites like “Sweet Home Alabama,” “Free Bird,” and “That Smell” (all of which were recorded at a show in Burgettstown, PA, near Pittsburgh on July 15, 1997) demonstrate that in the 1990s, lead singer Johnny Van Zant had no problem handling gems his late brother Ronnie Van Zant once belted out. And the studio tracks (which include “Preacher Man,” “Tomorrow’s Goodbye,” and the swamp blues-influenced “Voodoo Lake”) point to the fact that while 1999’s Edge of Forever and 1997’s Twenty aren’t in a class with Gimme Back My Bullets, Second Helping, or Street Survivors, they’re decent more often than not. Casual listeners would be better off starting out with a collection of Skynyrd’s 1970s classics, but for hardcore fans, Then and Now isn’t a bad CD to have in your collection. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi Performers: Carol Chase – Vocals (Background); Chris Eddy – Vocals (Background); Dale Rossington – Vocals (Background); Bill Cuomo – Keyboards; Billy Powell – Keyboards; Gary Rossington – Guitar; Hughie Thomasson – Vocals (Background), Guitar; Johnny Van Zant – Vocals; Josh Leo – Guitar (Acoustic); |

Now and Then $12.79 So is Chris de Burgh all about soft rock and schmaltzy ballads like “Missing You” and “The Lady in Red,” or is there something more to his music? Admittedly, his two biggest hit singles (and only Top Ten singles) are placed at tracks two and three on this album, Now and Then, a 2008 compilation of his work through the ages, but the true statement of intent regarding what the man is really about arrives with the opening track, “Don’t Pay the Ferryman,” his first ever hit that didn’t even reach the Top 40 but has become a standard art rock classic that possibly graces adult radio in the 21st century more often than his bigger successes. However, no fewer than 11 of the 20 tracks here were on his previously most successful greatest-hits compilation, Spark to a Flame, and Now and Then was — as usually seemed to be the case with de Burgh compilations — very under-represented with tracks from his early career. Indeed, from his first six albums of the 1970s and early ’80s before his chart breakthrough, there were only two tracks in total, “A Spaceman Came Travelling” from Spanish Train & Other Stories (included presumably because it had become such a Christmas standard) and the final track, “High on Emotion” from Man on the Line, and nothing at all from Far Beyond These Castle Walls, At the End of a Perfect Day, Crusader, or Eastern Wind. This was a shame, for surely there was a market for people to buy a collection of Chris de Burgh songs beyond the well-worn more famous and overworked ones from the late ’80s — although in fairness, this approach had already been covered by A&M on the compilation Best Moves, a long-forgotten gem from 1981, and on the long-deleted Telstar TV album The Very Best Of from 1984. Long since regarded more as a serious album artist, de Burgh had not had an entry in the singles chart in the 21st century up to the release of Now and Then, and had indeed become somewhat of an experimental rock act, as he showed on his previous studio album to this, The Storyman, and this side of de Burgh is given space in the shape of “Much More Than This,” “One World,” “Sailing Away,” and “Borderline,” songs that either tell a story or actually mean something. One can’t help feeling that with so much material already out there, this was a missed opportunity by UMTV, a mainstream TV advertising company, but their raison d’être was to sell lots of CDs, not educate the masses about an artist whose main body of work remains mostly overlooked. ~ Sharon Mawer, Rovi |

Now $17.84 Although their third American album was patched together (in the usual British Invasion tradition) from a variety of sources, it’s their best early R&B-oriented effort. Most of the Stones’ early albums suffer from three or four very weak cuts; Now! is almost uniformly strong start-to-finish, the emphasis on some of their blackest material. The covers of “Down Home Girl,” Bo Diddley’s vibrating “Mona,” Otis Redding’s “Pain in My Heart,” and Barbara Lynn’s “Oh Baby” are all among the group’s best R&B interpretations. The best gem is “Little Red Rooster,” a pure blues with wonderful slide guitar from Brian Jones (and a number one single in Britain, although it was only an album track in the U.S.). As songwriters, Jagger and Richards are still struggling, but they come up with one of their first winners (and an American Top 20 hit) with the yearning, soulful “Heart of Stone.” ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi |

Now Again $14.38 When the Flatlanders’ first (and for many years only) album finally received a proper release in America in 1990, 18 years after it was recorded, it was called More a Legend Than a Band. Three decades after those first sessions, Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and Butch Hancock, three of Texas’ most celebrated singer/songwriters, finally made it back into the studio to cut a second album, and on Now Again the Flatlanders finally sound like an honest-to-goodness band — – or at least full collaborators — in a way they never did before. While Gilmore tended to dominate the songs on More a Legend Than a Band (not surprising, since the band was often billed as Jimmie Dale Gilmore & the Flatlanders), Now Again sounds a lot more democratic; the glorious waver of Gilmore’s tenor is still the band’s strongest vocal presence, but the bluesy bite of Joe Ely’s voice and Butch Hancock’s homey storyteller’s twang get a much bigger share of the spotlight, and their harmonies have both the good humor and the Friday-night enthusiasm of a barroom singalong (though with a good bit more precision). With two exceptions, all the songs for Now Again were written collectively by the trio, and the material honors the three distinctive but complimentary personalities on board, from the easygoing roadhouse stomp of “Wavin’ My Heart Goodbye” and the down-home metaphysics of “Down in the Light of the Melon Moon” to the bluesy lope of “Right Where I Belong” and the joyously goofy neo-rockabilly of “Pay the Alligator.” Rather than sounding like a reunion of some aging cosmic cowboys, Now Again is the work of three singular talents who are also good friends, and the give and take of their musical personalities speaks both for their respect for one another and the understanding of their abilities; in short, this time out the Flatlanders really are a band, and Now Again is an album from them that’s strong enough to honor their long-simmering legend. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi Performers: Steve Wesson – Saw, Vocals; Gene Elders – Fiddle; Joe Ely – Harmonica, Dobro, Vocals, Keyboards, Guitar (Electric), Guitar (Bass), Guitar (Acoustic); Joel Jose Guzman – Accordion; Lloyd Maines – Dobro, Guitar (Steel); Paul Glasse – Mandolin; Robbie Gjersoe – Slide Banjo, Slide Guitar, Dobro, Vocals, Guitar (Electric), Guitar (Acoustic); Butch Hancock – Harmonica, Guitar (Acoustic) |

From Now On $13.58 As Smithsonian Folkways moved into the early 21st century, it expanded its catalog to not only include the reissues and collections of field recordings for which the label is most renowned, but also contemporary artists who have a bit more of a commercial reputation outside the folkloric community. One example was this 2008 release by Michael Doucet, who had reached one of the widest audiences of any Cajun performer in the decades prior to this recording, particularly in his work with Beausoleil. The way in which this CD was done, though, had more in common with the typical Smithsonian Folkways release than those done for bigger labels. It was cut, according to a note by Doucet in the booklet, “live in three sessions with no rehearsals, overdubs, or song lists.” While Doucet usually played fiddle and octave violin, he also moved to the guitar for one number and the accordion for another. Additionally, though he performs unaccompanied on eight of the 19 songs, on some he’s joined by fiddler Mitchell Reed and on others, less expectedly, by New Orleans jazz and funk guitarist Todd Duke. The material ranges from Doucet originals to covers of songs by Allen Toussaint and Hoagy Carmichael, as well as the blues standards “You Gotta Move” and “St. Louis Blues.” It’s buoyantly eclectic Cajun music, and if it’s pretty sparse in the arrangement department, that seems intentional and part of its appeal. The tracks featuring Duke are undoubtedly the most unusual and interesting here, as he’s pretty successful in investing Doucet’s brand of Cajun music with something of a New Orleans R&B feel. Doucet sings occasionally too, and though his vocals are much less impressive facets of his art than his instrumental skills, they fit adequately into the atmosphere of this CD. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi Performers: Michael Doucet – Octave Violin, Accordion, Fiddle, Vocals, Guitar; Mitchell Reed – Fiddle |

Work in Progress $14.99 “Joy Lutes wrote her first poem around age 10. In the ensuing two decades, she has crafted and accumulated poignant poetry as events in her life provided inspiration. Some were written to celebrate, others to motivate. What is central to them all is the message of hope and faith that is the center of Lutes’ life. You will find that her poetry reflects the real world struggles of a believer in Christ who finds strength in her abiding faith as she encounters life’s challenges. She has put together this compilation of work – some new and some from her past – in the hope that others will discover or rediscover the greatest inspiration of all and the only certainty in an uncertain world – faith in the One True God. Joy Lutes was born in Parkersburg, West Virginia, and spent her youth growing up ‘across the river’ in Marietta, Ohio. She earned a B.A. in Political Science from Wheeling Jesuit University. Joy spent several years in politics working on Capitol Hill and on several campaigns across the country. She now does freelance public relations work from her home in Alexandria, Virginia, where she resides with her husband and beloved basset hound, Riley.” |

Now! Dance 2 $26.34 The second installment of the Canadian Now! Dance series follows the same formula as the hugely successful first, with 17 of the biggest dance hits of the last six months, both in remixed and original form. Three artists from its predecessor make the cut here, Katy Perry (“E.T.”), Snoop Dogg (on his collaboration with David Guetta, “Sweat”), and Lady Gaga (“Born This Way”), but elsewhere, there’s a whole host of new faces selected for their floor-filling capabilities. Martin Solveig’s “Hello,” Flo Rida’s “Who Dat Girl?,” and tracks by Swedish House Mafia (“One”), David Guetta featuring Rihanna (“Who’s That Chick?”), and Danny Fernandes (“Take Me Away”) are left firmly intact, but the tracks that allow various hotshot producers and DJs to work their magic really give the compilation its unique selling point. The Dirty South Remix of Diddy – Dirty Money’s “Coming Home” might not impress the Bad Boy mogul due to the omission of his rap, but its contrast between Skylar Grey’s ethereal vocals and its added hypnotic rubbery synths and industrial beats works wonders, as does Chew Fu’s euphoric remix of Far East Movement’s “Rocketeer” and Passion Pit’s shimmering dream pop transformation of Bruno Mars’ “Grenade.” Not all the reworkings are as successful, as the Heart-sampling clattering R&B of Alyssa Reid’s “Alone Again” is turned into a generic slice of trashy Europop, Doman & Gooding’s pedestrian techno remix of Jessie J’s “Price Tag” removes the infectious laid-back vibes of the original, and the Arcade Southside Remix of Tinie Tempah’s “Written in the Stars” and Jody Den Broeder’s Radio Mix of Taio Cruz & Kylie Minogue’s “Higher” add little of note to the source material. Like its first volume, Now! Dance 2 is a hit-and-miss affair, but enough killer tunes are still here to kick-start the weekend for most partygoers. ~ Jon O’Brien, Rovi |

One Soul Now $14.38 While it seems more common in the ’80s, ’90s, and beyond for a good band to remain intact for ten-plus years, they all face the same challenge: how does one continue to keep the music fresh and remain relevant? The Cowboy Junkies faced an uphill battle from the get-go, always living in the shadow of The Trinity Session (1988), and moving from the mainstream (including major labels, radio play, and a gig on Saturday Night Live) to just under the radar. Despite these changes, the Junkies have still been able to make great albums, like 1992’s Black Eyed Man and 2001’s Open. Both of these albums also showed a band willing to delve into new sounds (country and classic rock, respectively) and come up winners. One Soul Now seems to pick up where Open left off, retaining the tougher sound highlighted by edgy guitar work and a more rhythmic pulse. The title cut opens with acoustic guitar before transforming into a sleepy rocker that manages to be seductive and sinister at the same time. Margo Timmins’ vocals are hypnotically lovely as usual, merging with bluesy guitar riffs and emerging above the morass as the chorus kicks in. Here, and on the following cut, “Why This One,” it’s easy to believe that the Junkies are going to pull off another coup. The arrangements and production of both cuts seem to bring a perfect balance to these songs, and the execution is handled with confidence. On second listen, however, Michael Timmins’ songs tend to float more than move, and by the time the listener reaches the third cut, “My Wild Child,” a familiar complaint against the Junkies emerges: the songs begin to fade into one another, more somnolent than hypnotic. Perhaps that’s why a number of the later cuts choose different approaches by adding everything from organ to accordion to handclaps. Unfortunately, the guitar work on “Hunting Grounds” sounds like an outtake from “Dark Hole Again” on Open, while “Stars of Our Stars” seems cheerfully dissident from the surrounding material. Similar complaints can be made against the remainder of the album, with the Junkies veering between lethargic rockers like “Call You Baby” to atypically upbeat pieces like “No Long Journey Home.” Longtime fans, wondering what the Cowboy Junkies have been up to for the last three years, will probably find several songs to like on One Soul Now. Newcomers will be much happier by picking up Open. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford Jr., Rovi Performers: Jeff Bird – Electric Mando Cello, Melodica, Percussion; Jaro Czerwinec – Accordion; Alan Anton – Bass; Linford Detweiler – Organ; Margo Timmins – Vocals; |

What Now Lord? $11.99 “What Now Lord? addresses ten foundational matters that are central to the growth and maturity of every Christian. If you are a new believer, one who has attained a degree of maturity or a “seasoned saint,” you will be blessed by this book. Its teachings will charged you, challenge you, and if you allow the Holy Spirit, will change you for all eternity. Dr. Michael Woods’ approach to Christian maturity is holistic as he combines faith with practice. His work of “studying theology” is reflected and mirrored by his life of “doing theology.” This multifaceted examination of Christian discipleship will benefit any believer who is serious about going from “faith to faith” and “glory to glory.” I highly recommend it. Dr. Robert Smith, Jr. – Professor of Preaching Beeson Divinity School of Samford University – Birmingham, AL Dr. Michael D. Woods has served in church leadership for over 30 years, spending 25 of those years in pastoral leadership. His earned theological degrees are the B.A., M.A., M.Div. and D.Min. Dr. Woods is the founder and president of Ministry with Excellence and the MWE School of Ministry. Ministry with Excellence provides coaching and consulting for pastors and churches. The MWE School of Ministry provides excellence in biblical and theological education, especially in the areas of Hermeneutics and Homiletics. In addition, for the past decade, Dr. Woods has taught preaching classes at two Atlanta area Bible Colleges. Dr. Woods is a sought after speaker for worship services, workshops and seminars at home in the U. S. and abroad.” |

Can We Go Home Now $10.38 The Roche sisters have been called oddballs more than once, and with good reason — though their approach has generally been a sweetly appealing folk-rock fusion, there’s always been something distinctly off-kilter about their sound. It could be the almost eerie blend of their three voices, or maybe it’s their collective tone, which is often reedy to the point of girlishness; sometimes the way they’re singing makes you wonder if you’re missing a joke somewhere. “Move” and “You (Make My Life Come True)” are both perfect love songs with charms as straightforward as the plainspoken singing that delivers them. Ditto for the quirky but endearing “I’m Someone Who Loves You.” But “Home Away from Home” deals in distressingly broad political stereotypes, and “When You’re Ready” wallows in artsy self-indulgence. The low points are more than balanced by the high points on this album, though. ~ Rick Anderson, Rovi Performers: Charlie Giordano – Accordion; David Mansfield – Pedal Steel, Fiddle, Guitar (Steel); Peter Lewy – Cello; David Roche – Vocals; Frank Vilardi – Drums; Garry Dial – Humming, Vocals (Background), Oboe, Piano, Bass; Joey Baron – Drums; Maggie & Terre Roche – Vocals, Keyboards; Maggie Roche – Vocals, Keyboards; |

New & Now $35.99 New & Now channels influences spanning from bossa nova to sunshine pop to vault Sue Raney into the mod world. Though still rooted in jazz, Billy Byers’ arrangements owe as much to swingin’ London as to swing itself, and the material draws more from the contemporary pop charts than the Great American Song Book, embracing hits from “Georgy Girl” to “Groovin’.” It wouldn’t work if Raney didn’t embrace the makeover in full, and her vocals reveal a maturity and strength often absent from previous sessions. Moreover, the production subjects her voice to a series of effects and treatments, and at every turn she blends seamlessly with her pop-art surroundings. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi |

Now vs. Now $13.58 The ever restless keyboardist Jason Lindner is at it again with another project far different than his previous big-band or small group efforts. In tandem with co-conspirators Mark Guiliana on drums and bassist Panagiotis Andreou also doing poetry and spoken word expressions, Lindner presents contemporary music that hearkens back to the M-Base concept of 20 years prior, but brings it into the future kicking and screaming. The music, dubbed exploratory electro-groove, has its funky, black bottom base, yet glistens with glee amidst the electric instruments Lindner wields with an improvisers spirit at his core. He’s still quite fond of the Fender Rhodes electric piano, but also incorporates ’70s-type synthesizers, quirky time signatures, and rhythm changes that suggest ghetto-blasted themes alongside the most progressive or techno-styled facades. The crew of guest stars added to the basic trio shows great diversity in textures and approaches; trumpeter Avishai Cohen, electric bass guitarist/vocalist/producer Me’Shell Ndegéocello, vocalist Claudia Acuña, percussionists Pedrito Martinez and Yosvany Terry, tenor saxophonist Anat Cohen, and guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel — a true melting pot of all-star instrumentalists. Probably the most retro sound crops up in the funky, quirky “Seven Ways,” as distant and present keyboards, Acuña’s vocals, and the horns swirl around a 7/8 beat. The very aggressive “Big Pump” lives up to its title in a high-powered and driven engine of an 11/8 beat that also showcases the lyrical signature sound of Lindner’s Rhodes. On the other side, “Worrisome” has the leader employing a Moog synth for a slower, pop-like song, the acoustic piano sound of the child’s song “Friendship & Love” takes up a lighter mood, and the “New Jersey Ballad” and the distended blues featuring Anat Cohen’s tenor, “Ahisma,” further tones down the big city-driven attitude quotient. Of the vocal tracks, the brief, under two minute album kickers “Time Together” and “Can’t Chase Time” combine the fusion of electric and acoustic instrumentals with sung and spoken words from Andreou, Baba Israel, and Danielle Negron on the former track, or out-and-out rap from Israel melted onto funk, ending with Lindner’s cascading acoustic piano for contrast in the latter instance. The ensemble conjures up chanted Latin-based Santeria voodoo mystique during “Far,” a soul-spirit poetic funk including Israel and poet Frances Velasquez Guevara in mixed meters, very similar to recent work by Robert Glasper and Bilal. A tribute to the N.Y.C. subway system, “Subterranean Train-Travelin’,” is a straight funky poem from Israel about the trials and tribulations of metro transportation that all city dwellers can relate to. Where Lindner is the central character on the Rhodes, what he has constructed to surround that sound is very busy, dense, and updated to the point of it being a nu jazz that stands alone among his peer group keyboardists. This recording should appeal to the rave-up |

Every card in 51st State can be put into play in three different ways: You can invade a location to gain many resources once or you can sign a contract with this location to gain one resource every turn or you can attach the location to your State so you can use its skill. One card three possibilities ? lots of decisions and choices that matter. Designer Ignacy Trzewiczek passed along this example of how a card might be played. You are playing the Mutants and want to put a Gas Station into the game. You can: Be a true mutant and invade the gas station bringing home four fuel counters that you can use. Be a nice mutant and visit the gas station to say ‘I will not kill you but you must give me one fuel every round.’ Or attach the gas station to your land saying Hey you are in my state now! allowing you to sell fuel. Trzewiczek says that 51st State will include 110 cards counters and players sheets.Description written by W. Eric Martin and used with permission of BoardgameNews.com |

A House Is Not a Home $23.92 Polly Adler’s house -the brothel that gave this best-selling 1953 autobiography its title–was a major site of New York City underworld activity from the 1920s through the 1940s. Adler’s notorious Lexington Avenue house of prostitution functioned as a sort of social club for New York’s gangsters and a variety of other celebrities, including Robert Benchley and his friend Dorothy Parker. According to one New York tabloid, it made Adler’s name synonymous with sin. This new edition of Adler’s autobiography brings back into print a book that was a mass phenomenon, in both hardback and paperback, when it was first published. A self-consciously literary work, A House Is Not a Home provides an informal social history of immigrant mobility, prostitution, Jewish life in New York, police dishonesty, the white slavery scare of the early twentieth century, and political corruption. Adler’s story fills an important gap in the history of immigrant life, urban experience, and organized crime in New York City. While most other accounts of the New York underworld focus on the lives of men, from Herbert Asbury’s Gangs of New York through more recent works on Jewish and Italian gangsters, this book brings women’s lives and problems to the forefront. A House Is Not a Home is compellingly readable and was popular enough to draw Holly wood’s attention in the early 1960s–leading to a film starring Shelley Winters as Adler. The book has been largely forgotten in the ensuing decades, lost both to its initial audience of general readers and to scholars in women’s studies, immigration history, and autobiography who are likely to find it a treasure trove. Now, with a new introduction by Rachel Rubin thatcontextualizes Adler’s life and literary achievement, A House Is Not a Home is again available to the many readers who have come to understand such marginal life stories as a special refraction of the more typical American success narrative. |

A Long Stay in a Distant Land $47.26 A hilarious and inventive first novel tracing three generations of a death-stalked Chinese-American family in Orange County, California The Lums are cursed: ever since Grandpa Melvin was inspired to join the U.S. army after watching a Popeye movie and-as family lore has it-unleashed a relentless rain of steel death upon the Nazis, Lum after Lum has been doomed to an untimely demise, be it by tainted cheeseburger or speeding ice cream truck. The most recent victim is Louis Lum’s mother, at the hands of a medical student asleep at the wheel. Now Louis, a fact checker at a hot rod magazine in his early twenties, must move back home with his gangsta rap-obsessed father, Sonny, to prevent him from enacting the revenge he promises. But soon Louis’s concern shifts to another wayward family member, his uncle Bo Lum, who has disappeared in Hong Kong after many years of self-imposed exile. After the annual family meeting at Grandma Esther’s house, Louis decides to leave his father and go to Hong Kong and find Bo, his grandmother’s favorite son. As Louis’ search progresses, the tragicomic story of three generations of Lums in America is revealed through the eyes of Louis, Sonny, and Grandma Esther. A novel about the unexpected ways love and myth work to both sustain and threaten family ties, A Long Stay in a Distant Land introduces a wry and original new voice in American fiction. |

A Season of Knives $9.98 In 1592, Sir Robert Carey, a handsome courtier fleeing his creditors, his father’s wrath, and the close scrutiny of his Queen, came north to Carlisle to take up his new post as Deputy Warden of the West March. The presence of his true love, the married Elizabeth Widdrington, was no mere coincidence. Before long, Sir Robert was up to his ruff in horse rustling and treason (A Famine of Horses), but he sorted that out with dispatch. Now he’s in trouble again. The rowdy Grahams plan to kidnap Elizabeth as she journeys home to her husband. While Sir Robert storms out to stop them, someone murders the man he has just sacked from his post of paymaster to the Carlisle garrison. When Sir Robert returns, he finds his servant Barnabus slung into the castle dungeon, accused of the crime, and his arch enemy Sir Richard Lowther scheming to have Carey arrested for masterminding the murder…. When even faithful Sergeant Dodd is prepared to believe he did it, the courtier finds his hands full–while ruin stares him in the face–as he juggles the murder inquiry and untangles a skein of love and greed that reminds him most uncomfortably of how carefully he must conceal his love for Elizabeth. A Season of Knives, based on the real Sir Robert Carey’s tumultuous life, is not only a keenly plotted detective story, it’s an innovative police procedural and historical writing at its rousing best. The other works in this series are A Plague of Angels (Introduction by Diana Gabaldon), A Famine of Horses (Introduction by Sharon Kay Penman), and A Surfeit of Guns (Introduction by Barbara Peters). The author is at work on a fifth Sir Robert Carey. |

Ancient Greek Scholarship: A Guide to Finding, Reading, and Understanding Scholia, Commentaries, Lexica, and Grammatical Treatises, from Their Be $26.39 Ancient Greek Scholarship constitutes a precious resource for classicists, but one that is underutilized because graduate students and even mature scholars lack familiarity with its conventions. The peculiarities of scholarly Greek and the lack of translations or scholarly aids oftendiscourages readers from exploiting the large body of commentaries, scholia, lexica, and grammatical treatises that have been preserved on papyrus and via the manuscript tradition. Now, for the first time, there is an introduction to such scholarship that will enable students and scholars unfamiliarwith this material to use it in their work. Ancient Greek Scholarship includes detailed discussion of the individual ancient authors on whose works scholia, commentaries, or single-author lexica exist, together with explanations of the probable sources of that scholarship and the ways it is nowused, as well as descriptions of extant grammatical works and general lexica. These discussions, and the annotated bibliography of more than 1200 works, also include evaluations of the different texts of each work and of a variety of electronic resources. This book not only introduces readers to ancient scholarship, but also teaches them how to read it. Here readers will find a detailed, step-by-step introduction to the language, a glossary of over 1500 grammatical terms, and a set of more than 200 passages for translation, each accompanied bycommentary. The commentaries offer enough help to enable undergraduates with as little as two years of Greek to translate most passages with confidence; in addition, readers are given aids to handling the ancient numerical systems, understanding the references foundin works of ancient scholarship, and using an apparatus criticus (including an extensive key to the abbreviations used in an apparatus). Half the passages are accompanied by a key, so that the book is equally suitable for those studying on their own and for classes with graded home |

Art Brut: Dubuffet and the Origins of Outsider Art $223.19 In the first half of the twentieth century, avant-garde artists in Europe, keen to break with academic tradition, began looking beyond the accepted canons of Western art in a search for new sources of inspiration. Primitive art, the drawings of children, the art of the insane, automatism, and graffiti all opened up new avenues of experimentation. One of the key figures in this drive to push back the boundaries of art was leading French artist Jean Dubuffet. At the end of World War II, Dubuffet became interested in the works being produced by patients in psychiatric hospitals and by other social outcasts. He made two fruitful trips to Switzerland, where he discovered Wolfli, Aloise, and Muller, now recognized as important exponents of what was later to become known as Outsider Art. In 1948, Dubuffet founded the Campagnie de l’Art Brut in order to extend and document the collections he had recently begun. In 1976, after various adventures, the Collection de l’Art Brut moved to its permanent home in Lausanne. This carefully researched book traces the history of the concept of Art Brut, which is inseparable from the work and personality of the man who did the most for the appreciation and preservation of these remarkable works. The account is completed by biographical notes on the artists featured and an extensive bibliography. The works reproduced, mostly from the collection created by Dubuffet, have retained their subversive freedom, which continues to fascinate and inspire artists and collectors today. |
