Steve Jobs: One Last Thing $21.24 Few men have changed our everyday world of work, leisure, and human communication in the way that Apple founder, Steve Jobs, has done. This documentary looks not only at how his talent, his style and his imagination have shaped all of our lives, but also at the influences that shaped and moulded the man himself. Since his untimely death, tributes from around the world have secured Steve’s place in the pantheon of great Americans. Now, we talk to the people who changed the man, who changed our world. Through interviews with the people who worked closely with him or chronicled his life, we gain unique insight into what made him tick. In a never before broadcast, exclusive interview, Steve Jobs expounds his own philosophy of life, and offers advice to us all on changing our own lives to achieve our ambitions, our desires, and our dreams. “Life can be much broader once you discover one simple fact; that everything around you that you call life was made up by people no smarter than you…the minute you understand that, you can poke life; you can change it, you can mould it, embrace it, make you mark upon it. Once you learn that…. you’ll never be the same again.” |

Dirty Jobs Season 5 DVD $49.95 An unflinching look at the unsung American worker, and the unusual but vital vocations that must be done. There’s a lot to learn as host Mike Rowe introduces us to an elite assortment of men and women who make their living doing the most unthinkable jobs. Ep. 1) Animal Relocator: CORN MILLER Mike travels to DeKalb, Mississippi to try his hand at making corn meal by working at an old-fashioned mill house that uses water driven millstones to make the meal from whole kernels of corn. Mike starts out by clearing debris from the water driven turbine that powers the mill and then he opens the gates to allow water to move through the turbine to make the corn meal. Then Mike moves into the millhouse and loads corn kernels into a hopper. The millstones grind the corn into meal and it begins to fill large sacks. As the sacks fill up, Mike pours them into a sifter to remove any larger pieces of corn from the meal. Then he scoops the corn meal into smaller paper bags, putting ten pounds into each bag, and closes each bag of corn meal with a special sewing machine. ANIMAL RELOCATOR Mike travels to Wills Point, Texas, to help with relocating exotic animal species. The species on the schedule for the day’s work is the Pere David’s deer, a Chinese deer that has gone extinct in it’s native land but still exists in captivity across the United States and Europe. Mike helps out by catching one male and one female deer, which will be moved to a larger site than the one they are currently located at in an effort to start a new herd. Once Mike learns how to operate the tranquilizer projector to subdue the Pere David’s, he heads out onto the ranch to find the animals. The male is subdued first. Mike helps load it into a trailer and then he works with a veterinarian to administer medicines before its transport. Then Mike helps catch the female Pere David’s, placing it into another trailer. Mike ends the day helping to relocate the pair in an effort to help provide a population that can one day be reintroduced to its native habitat in China. Ep. 2) Exotic Nanny: Mike heads to Pilot Point, Texas, to work at a ranch that harbors and breeds exotic animal species. He starts out the day by helping with ring-tailed lemurs. Donning a protective helmet and thick leather gloves, Mike helps clean out the lemur pen. The protective gear is worn for a very good reason — lemurs are very territorial and will quickly attack anything or anyone who invades their space – as Mike quickly discovers. He moves on to work with a porcupine, moving it into a small cage to help determine its gender. Next, he assists with some of the baby animals at the ranch. He feeds milk to a baby camel and then takes the camel around the ranch for a little exercise. Then Mike helps feed baby kangaroos and also helps potty train them. Next, he removes a couple of baby joeys from their mother’s pouches and then moves on to a baby three-toed sloth. Finally, he clips the claws of a binturong, also calle |

A Nurse’s Story $16.99 The team of nurses that Tilda Shalof found herself working with in the intensive care unit (ICU) of a big-city hospital was known as Laura’s Line. They were a bit wild: smart, funny, disrespectful of authority, but also caring and incredibly committed to their jobs. Laura set the tone with her quick remarks. Frances, from Newfoundland, was famous for her improvised recipes. Justine, the union rep, wore t-shirts emblazoned with defiant slogans, like Nurses Care But It’s Not in the Budget. Shalof was the one who had been to university. The others accused her of being sooo sensitive. They depended upon one another. Working in the ICU was both emotionally grueling and physically exhausting. Many patients, quite simply, were dying, and the staff strove mightily to prolong their lives. With their skill, dedication, and the resources of modern science, they sometimes were almost too successful. Doctors and nurses alike wondered if what they did for terminally-ill patients was not, in some cases, too extreme. A number of patients were admitted when it was too late even for heroic measures. A boy struck down by a cerebral aneurysm in the middle of a little-league hockey game. A woman rescued – too late – from a burning house. It all took its toll on the staff. And yet, on good days, they thrived on what they did. Shalof describes a colleague who is managing a crashing patient: I looked at her. Nicky was flushed with excitement. She was doing five different things at the same time, planning ahead for another five. She was totally focused, in her element, in control, completely at home with the chaos. There was a huge smile on her face. Nurses like to fix things. If they can. Shalof, a veteran ICU nurse, reveals what it is really like to work behind the closed hospital curtains. The drama, the sardonic humour, the grinding workload, the cheerful camaraderie, the big issues and the small, all are brought vividly to life in this remarkable book. From the |

As You Were $25.95 The war story that needs to be told: a Washington Post reporter follows five courageous National Guard soldiers as they deploy to Iraq, survive combat, and come home to pick up the pieces. The Iraq War radically transformed the typical one weekend a month, two weeks a year commitment of many National Guard soldiers around the country into lengthy, grueling tours of duty in Iraq. Little has been written about the tens of thousands of guardsmen and women sent to Iraq and the unique challenges these citizen-soldiers have faced in serving their country and then coming home to the civilian world. Washington Post reporter Christian Davenport was embedded with the Virginia National Guard’s 2-224th Aviation Regiment and witnessed the hardship and heroism of its members firsthand, from their sudden call-up, through their return from overseas, to new battles faced on the home front as they struggle to rebuild their lives after the war. He tells the story of five of these remarkable soldiers a teacher, a 50-something Vietnam vet, a sorority-girl-turned-door-gunner, a born leader, and a young woman unable to find her place in the world. By continuing to follow these soldiers, and their families, for more than a year after their tour, Davenport chronicles the difficulties they face returning home: lost jobs, financial woes, and the inability to relate to a society that has never been so divorced from the war its country was fighting. Depicting these soldiers as heroes, not victims, As You Were reveals a hidden dimension of the war, and provides an intimate look at the patriotism and courage that inspire those who have fought in it and the rest of us as well. Christian Davenport (Washington, DC) is a reporter for the Washington Post. He was embedded with the Virginia National Guard’s 2-224th Regiment, and his work covering the military helped uncover some of the iconic photographs of the Abu Ghraib prison scandal. |

Detroit Tales $22.95 The stories in Detroit Tales are tales about urban, working-class America. People struggle both to remain in the city and to escape the city. The three central motifs of this collection are the city, the workplace, and the automobile. In their cars, people negotiate the territory between work and home. Conflicts arise with the characters’ impulses to veer off their well-worn paths. What can they do? Where can they go? What forces pull them away, and what forces pull them back? The characters search for what can provide them with spiritual sustenance. Often, relief from the drudgery of their daily lives is provided in the fleeting dazzle of fireworks or Christmas lights, but they take what they can. If these stories have one unifying theme, it is that escape is not the answer. When the pulls of friendship and love and personal responsibility draw us back to our ordinary homes and our ordinary jobs, we must trust those pulls, and we must lead those lives with as much dignity as we can muster. |

Forgotten Families: Ending the Growing Crisis Confronting Children and Working Parents in the Global Economy $29.89 In the last half-century, radical changes have rippled through the workplace and the home from Boston to Bombay. In the face of rapid globalization, these changes affect us all, and we can no longer confine ourselves to addressing working and social conditions within our own borders without simultaneously addressing them on a global scale. Based on over a thousand in-depth interviews and survey data from more than 55,000 families spanning five continents, Forgotten Families is the first truly global account of how the changing conditions of work threaten children, women and men, and the infirm. It addresses problems faced by working families in industrialized and developing countries alike, touching on issues of child health and development, barriers to parents getting and keeping jobs, problems families confront daily and in times of crisis, and the roles of growing inequalities.
